Figures 176, 177, 178, 179, 180, 181 are made by Bob Allen ≤wb0fvk@arrl.net> 9.9.1999 This, might be called "Binary Arts # 0", or "Fits In The Box" : it's the shape my pieces came in as shipped by Binary Arts, and the shape I have to solve each time I return them to the box, as determined by a clear plastic shipping mold that also holds the deck of shape cards. Here it is, upside down so it can stand by itself. /SOMA176 ;BINARY ARTS #0 /...../44222 /...../14432 /...../11733 /55766/57736 /.---./5---6 This pleasant shape, I am calling the "Evening Star". It is a modification of the unsolvable A024 "The Memorial". /SOMA177 ;EVENINGSTAR /--.--/--.--/--4-- /--.--/--4--/--4-- /-...-/-246-/-166- /..7../.277./11655 /-...-/-275-/-235- /--.--/--3--/--3-- /--.--/--.--/--3-- This one does not seem to be among the existing spirals. If it is indeed new, [It is] I wish to call it the "Pin Wheel". It has 6 distinct solutions /SOMA178 ;PINWHEEL /-..--/-.4--/-11-- /-..../-.4../-1466 /..3../73336/77426 /....-/..5.-/7552- /--..-/--5.-/--22- This one looked sort of like a "Christmas Tree" in 2-D, but not so much in 3 dimensions. It has 135 distinct solutions. I doubt that any of them can actually stand up, but I'm still looking. /SOMA179 ;XMASTREE /-66--/-11-- /-67.-/-613- /4477./22733 /-44.-/-253- /-55--/-25-- "The Airport Tower" is a modification of the previous shape. This one has 139 distinct solutions. This solution stands up; many have "floppy arms". (5,2,5) [Actually it bears resemblance to the B014 by Thorleif Bundgaard] /SOMA180 ;AIRPORT TOWER /..7../.377./33342/.564./.166. /...../..7../55222/.564./.114. Here is the 3-fold shape. It is actually quite nice looking on the computer screen, and fun to stare at when built. It has only two unique solutions. /SOMA181 Three Planes /6.../6611/5571/.577 /6..-/3..-/5..-/247- /3..-/3..-/3..-/244- /...-/...-/...-/224- /SOMA182 ;Car -Unstable- ;Ana Mendoza (amendozah@hotmail.com) 12.10.1999 ;16 years, Spain, Barcelona /.11../24477/44..7 /.15../25567/..... /.35../23366/23..6 /SOMA183 ;Bed -Unstable- ;Ana Mendoza (amendozah@hotmail.com) 12.10.1999 ;16 years, Spain, Barcelona /3...2/11566/.556. /3...2/31576/..... /3...2/44772/.447. It has one Planar 180 degree Rotation and two perpendicular Diagonal Rotations, with no Reflections at all. It is strange enough that I don't feel too bad I missed it. This shape is simple, and kind of interesting looking. And, it stands up by itself!! It has four unconstrained solutions, and so I assume only this one unique solution. You may have to "roll the image around" to fully see it on the screen. /SOMA191 ;PBYK ;Bob Allen;16. december 1999 06:54 /-1./-1./-7./-77/-.. /.1-/.4-/.4-/.7-/22- /-6-/-6-/-4-/-4-/-2- /66-/.5-/.5-/.3-/.2- /-../-55/-3./-3./-3. And here is a new 8-fold Class, with Planar Reflection and 180 Planar Rotation along all three major axes : /SOMA192 ;TWICEC ;Bob Allen ;16. december 1999 06:54 /-447-/-...-/-225- /44377/11675/12655 /-333-/-...-/-266- This figure has 48 unconstrained solutions, so I assume it has 6 unique solutions. This solution is not stable; perhaps another is, but somehow I doubt it. --------------------------------------------- James(Jim) E.
